The Business and Enterprise Systems (BES) Directorate Agile Services Office has introduced an enhanced Agile Metrics Guide, designed to transform how software delivery teams measure and optimize their development processes. This updated framework provides standardized metrics across five key focus areas: process, quality, product, devsecops, and core operations.

Recognizing the growing demand for data-driven decision-making in agile environments, the guide offers more than 25 specialized metrics to help teams improve efficiency and outcomes. Process metrics include essential tools like sprint burndown charts, velocity tracking, and cumulative flow diagrams to monitor workflow efficiency. Quality metrics focus on unit test coverage, code quality assessments, and security health monitoring to ensure high-quality deliverables.

"This framework enables teams to make informed decisions based on actionable data rather than assumptions," said Agile Coach, Tony Maddin. “Metrics are organized into initial, intermediate, and advanced levels, aligning with an organization’s Agile Maturity Model progression from crawl to run/fly phases.”

Capability delivery managers, product line managers, and portfolio managers can now select metrics tailored to their specific agile framework, improvement goals, and business requirements. The guide emphasizes flexibility, recognizing that each program has unique needs and compliance requirements.

This initiative marks a major milestone in standardizing agile measurement practices across the BES Directorate while preserving the adaptability necessary for successful agile implementation. It empowers teams to achieve greater efficiency, quality, and alignment with mission-critical objectives.
